I just caught the tail end of this thread, but I have addressed this
very question in my thesis at the HIT Lab. This thesis is entitled
Virtual Reality Monitoring: How Real is Virtual Reality? It can be
found on the HIT Lab site at:

http://www.hitl.washington.edu/publications/hullfish/

It is also available in RTF format. In brief, this study adapted a
paradigm from cognitive psychology to explore what is real in people's
memory. Results were very surprising, and eery! Subjects were very
confused as to what was real and what was virtual. Anyone who takes
the time to read it, let me know what you think.
