Yes, a square-wave generator with some simple circuit could probably
be used to drive them.  I took apart a StereoGraphics SimulEyes (TM)
VR and looked at the signals with an oscilloscope. The signal to the
glasses are square waves into the controller box and square waves to
the glasses. So I imagine you can use another square wave to the
controller box for you flicker stimulus.  Let me know more details and
