Having searched a lot of VR literature I have not come across any
research into moving platforms aimed at keeping people in the same
place while they feel like they physically walk around a virtual
landscape. This could be used for anything from simulating
walkthroughs to playing Virtual Doom.

If research was carried out in this area, was there a fundamental
problem preventing the idea being viable, such as the impossiblity of
accelerating the surface sufficiently fast without the user falling
over?

I would be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of any
relevant literature or any solutions to this problem which they have
come across.
