Take a look at the paper I just presented at the UIST'96 symposium
(ACM's Synposium on User Interface Software and Technology).

The paper is
   MacIntyre, B. and Feiner, S.
``Language-Level Support for Exploratory Programming of
	  Distributed Virtual Environments.</a>''
in <i>Proc. UIST '96</i>. Seattle, WA., November, 1996.

and is available for download at
	http://www.cs.columbia.edu/graphics/publications/uist96.ps

The slides from my talk are at
	http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~bm/uist96-talk/

In addition to talking about my work, I have an extensive
bibliography of, and short discussion (hey, it's a 12 page paper)
about, many distributed VR systems.

It's totally dependent on CPU and/or graphics cards.
