            Graduate Research Assistantship
         Human Factors of Virtual Environments

    Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California
            Department of Computer Science

We are looking for someone interested in pursuing a graduate
degree in the area of human factors of virtual environment
technology to join our group.

Our Research Group

Our group, founded by Professor Mike Zyda, has long been a leader
in VE research. We are currently expanding our focus to include
human representations and interactions in VEs. Our laboratory is
equipped with a number of large-screen displays, head-mounted
displays, tracking devices, hand devices, spatial sound systems,
and more. We develop on a variety of SGI workstations.

Our Research
We are currently conducting research in the following areas:
o the integration of articulated humans in networked VEs
o spatial sound cues in VE training systems
o navigation in VEs
o locomotion evaluation
o two-handed input in networked environments
o social interaction in VEs
In general, we are interested in ways to increase the
usability of VE systems for training, task performance, and
other applications, and to develop interface technology to
meet this goal.

The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in computer
science or a related field, have a strong interest in pursuing
graduate studies in human-computer interaction, and knowledge of
Unix, C++, and 3D computer graphics.

This is a fully funded graduate research position. Our department
offers MS and PhD degrees in computer science.
Applicants must be US citizens.
