We are a group of five students at the Norwegian University of Science
and Technology working on a project to create a VR landscape model of
a part of Norway. (Using hardware from SGI, an Onyx with RealityEngine
II)

For this we have acquired landscape data in USGS DEM format, with
accuracy of 100metres (the sampling has been performed on a
100x100metres grid).

Now, this is a too coarse a representation at close distance. 

Therefore we need to get hold of software that allows us to refine our
digital elevation data. This will of course be a daunting task, but
for now this refining of the landscape data will only be applied to
special areas/interesting places.

There must be a lot of software packages that allows editing of
landscape data, and we hope that we can get some input from you on
which are the most promising programs. Both shareware and commercial
applications are of interest to us.

We do want this landscape modeling software to run on PC's or Mac's,
as we do not want to require an Onyx just to edit landscapes.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.
