There have been a spate of posts of whether stereo is essential to VR
displays and there is a re-current theme on this list about what
constitutes VR (e.g. MUD <-> Stereo-immersive ?).

We have a paper recently out in IJHCS that tries to address many of these
issues. Academic press are very generous with their free reprints so I've
a large stack of these cluttering up my office:

Wann J. & Mon-Williams M. (1996)  Whats does virtual reality NEED?: Human
factors issues in the design of 3-dimensional computer environments.
Intern. Journal of Human-Computer Studies 44, 829-847.

If you'd like a copy of the paper above, so you can tell me I'm talking
through my butt (or "bottom" as we say in England) then email me a landmail
address and at least I can pretend all those trees died for a reason.
