Take a look at:

Wilson, J.R., D'Cruz, M., Cobb, S. and Eastgate, R. (1996).  Virtual
Reality for Industrial Applications: Opportunities and Limitations.

Chapter 5, Cases of VR Industrial Applications describes a case study
of the Rover Group Powertrain that uses VR for the visualization of
new product/process layouts.

The authors of the book are members of the Virtual Reality Applicatons
Research Team (VIRART).  VIRART projects include the Virtual Control
Room and Factory Planning and Layout:
