There is another problem too.  This is more of a technical one.  The
quake files are heavily optimized.  To process one of the levels takes a
couple of hours on a pentium 90 according to one of the papers on their
www site.  They have a special alpha server running these processing
program for them to save time.  The would have an impact on how
practical it would be for them to convert their engine to use VRML
files.
