Announcing a new book on HMD design:

Head-Mounted Displays: Designing for the User, by James E. Melzer and
Kirk W. Moffitt

This is the first guide to head-mounted displays (HMDs) that places
the emphasis where it belongs-on the end user. It addresses the wide
array of human-centered disciplines required for the design of
head-mounted virtual reality, industrial and military display systems.

This volume includes new information and approaches for HMD design
including:
 * Replacing the traditional engineering design approach with a
user-centered model
 * A unique compilation of HMD optical requirements and lens designs
 * Cybersickness and eye strain: causes and solutions
 * How head and neck anatomy drive HMD head-supported weight requirements
 * Mapping the needs of the human visual system into a successful HMD
design
 * A unique model for HMD stereoscopic imagery
 * Replacing traditional anthropometric methods with ones that work
 * Testing HMDs for utility and user acceptance
 * How brain-actuated control can replace clumsy manual interfaces

>From exploding myths about traditional anthropometry techniques to
discussing obscure data on preventing eye strain, this volume gives
you a solid understanding of factors critical to end-user acceptance:
user-centered design, imaging and optics, anthropometry, safety, human
factors, visual perception and system testing. Topics such as visual
displays, image alignment, neck strain, and brain-actuated control are
explored in depth. You also have a superb categorization of HMD
optical designs, a state-of-the-art model for stereoscopic viewing as
well as an extensive glossary of HMD-related terms. This guide covers
the important issues for the designer, user and buyer of
next-generation devices and systems. This volume will not only appeal
to designers, but to anyone who uses or specifies displays or other
body mounted viewing devices.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: James E. Melzer is a Senior Project Engineer at
Kaiser Electro-Optics. He has extensive experience in optical and
displays engineering, and is an expert in display design for
head-mounted systems, aviation life-support, and user
interface. Mr. Melzer has also been awarded three patents in
head-mounted display design. Kirk Moffitt, Ph.D., is a Human Factors
Consultant. He has extensive background in the human-centered design
of virtual-reality, medical and military systems. Dr. Moffitt holds a
patent for a method to improve image quality in binocular HMDs.
