I think Bernie Rohel would be the person to contact in that regard.

It's only my opinion but I would defenitely go for a stand alone,
C/C++ coded, solution. You will get much more control for your
specific scientific task using a VR C/C++ library. Well, VRML is not
much more than a 3D file format (for now at least) so it could be used
to store your 3D objects but my experience was that it was more easy
to design my geometries using a modeler tool like 3D studio and then
export the geometries to a 3DS or DXF file that my VR app could load
back in.

Hope it helped
