Shumin Zhai at the University of Toronto has been heavily involved
in controller devices for several years; I know he has a taxonomy for
the controllers, but I don't know if he or David Drascic have any
work specifically on measures of 'presence'.

Their lab is http://vered.rose.utoronto.ca/ where you will also find
a large collection of their research material.

Metrics of presence is a good question; I don't recall any such
talk by Bill Buxton or Ron Reisenbach, but that is not to say they
hadn't done work on this or if they know of any. Bill is now attached
to Alias Research and Ron runs TelePresence Inc with Garry Beirne
(http://www.telepres.com/)

Hope this helps!
