The Private Eye is the same technology used in the Virtual Boy from
Nintendo (IIRC).  And they do better than CGA these days.  For more info
about it and other cheap HMDs/monocles go through the MIT wearable

These guys are cool.

They have a bit about canabalizing the VB for it's displays, though they 
aren't all that great.  They're cheepo, and low res.  But if you're on a
limited budget and don't want to spend the $1200 for a good PI...
