ACM SIGGraph - Silicon Valley Chapter May Meeting

What: High resolution flat panel displays
When: Thursday, May 22nd, 7:30pm
Where: Apple Computer Auditorium, R&D 4

The topic will be high resolution flat panel displays.Chi Huang
and Alan Lewis from Dpix will talk about the latest
developments in high resolution flat panel displays.

Abstract
Recent developments in AMLCD technology have lead to dramatic
improvements in AMLCD image quality, and flat panel displays can now
offer advantages beyond the compact, lightweight form-factor essential
for notebook computers. AMLCD-based desktop monitors are now available
from several manufacturers, and these provide brighter, sharper, more
stable images with better color gamut than conventional CRTs, and take
up far less of the user's desk space. The poor viewing angle range of
conventional AMLCDs has been greatly improved by such developments as
In-Plane Switching (IPS), Optically Compensated Bend (OCB) and better
compensation materials. However, the potential for AMLCD technology goes
well beyond simply replacing CRTs. For example, the 7 million pixel
display offered by dpiX, A Xerox New Enterprise Company, achieves a
pixel density comparable with that of a high quality print, and
liquid-crystal based reflective display technology is also starting to
show real promise, with the possibility of full color reflective
displays in the foreseeable future. This talk will review these
developments, discuss their implications for display system
design, and offer some speculation about future directions.
