Dear real VR workers,

Recently, there were several emails concerning a VR application
classification : vob@artec.uni-Bremen, brundage@ipac.caltech.edu, etc.
My point does not actually answer the question posed by those
people, but it suggests a classification I am using in my VR course.

This classification is based on the genuine benefit which is provided
by the VR application to the user.
It is divided into 4 categories :
- VR fot acting (modifying the (real) environment) :
        robotics
        surgery
- VR for designing (creating a new idea)
        equipment
        room arrangement
- VR for learning (modifying (improving) our mind)
        driving
        sports
        medicine
        psychotherapy
- VR for feeling (modifying our current state of mind)
        visiting a museum
        playing games, sports
Most VR applications fit one (and mostly only one) of these categories.

What is your feeling about this classification ?

Alain Grumbach.
