Perhaps it is dead, but I think it will resurface when hardware is
powerful enough to make photorealistic 3D rendering realtime.  Having
a stereoscopic, photorealistic, and realtime VR experience would not
only be fun, but quite useful to those who visualize data in 3D.

Also, VR hardware prices have not fallen enough to allow enthusiasts
to get involved.  Right now, where I co-op we have CrystalEyes stereo
glasses and a large projection screen on which to view our data.
That's all great, but I wouldn't dream of trying to buy that for home.
I just have to be content with my PC monitor for now. :)
