Yes, virtual reality is used as more than a really neat way to play games.

I work in a 10x10x10 CAVE where we study the effects of stimuli on
subjects.  The end goal is to see how the mind interprets stimuli and
if it is possible to fool the mind and create a true virtual
reality. So far the cave is relatively new and we haven't gotten all
of the bugs worked out of it yet, so we haven't messed around that
much. This stuff is by no means cheap. One of the things that we do
have running (at the moment) is a flight simulator. With this we watch
people as they fly through narrow canyons for signs of uneasiness and
motion sickness.
