RESEARCH PROGRAMMER
Pablo Research Group
Department of Computer Science
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Multiple positions are available in several high visibility projects,
including (a) a technical liasion to the high-performance storage and
distributed collaboration enabling technology team of the NSF PACI
National Computational Science Alliance (NCSA), (b) performance analysis
and input/output software developer with the ASCI Center for Advanced
Rocket Simulation (CSAR), and (c) performance analysis and virtual
environment software developer.

These positions involve working with other members of the Pablo Research
Group in collaboration with scientists and commercial users in other
academic departments, in national laboratories, and in national supercomputer
centers to study the performance of highly parallel applications on large
scale computing systems. The research programmer(s) will be expected to use
and extend existing software tools to capture, display, and analyze data on
the performance of the applications and systems being studied. Insights
gained must be communicated to researchers in the area of performance
analysis, to computer system vendors, and to our national collaborators.
The goals of this effort are to direct the design of future parallel file
systems and system resource management policies, to guide optimization of
existing systems and software, and to explore next generation virtual
environments for distributed collaboration and data analysis.

The ideal candidate would enjoy working with internationally known
researchers and the latest equipment in an academic environment. Enthusiasm,
technical competence, ability to learn new skills, and attention to detail are
critical for success in these positions. Communication skills, both oral and
written, and the ability to work independently, are also of utmost importance.

The minimum requirements are a bachelor's degree in computer science or a
related scientific field and at least two years experience with C
(preferably C++) and UNIX. In addition, experience with high-performance
parallel systems, Fortran, MPI, virtual reality (using OpenGL) and large
scale software projects are highly desired.

Further information about the Pablo group and our areas of research can be
found at http://www-pablo.cs.uiuc.edu

These positions are available immediately. To assure full consideration,
applications should be received by December 5, 1997. Each position is a
12-month, 100 percent time academic professional appointment with regular
University of Illinois benefits. Salary will be commensurate with
experience. Interviewing may take place during the application period, but
no final decisions will be made until after the application deadline.
