                            SPECIALISED MASTER

                        Distributed Virtual Reality

A master specialized in the Distributed Virtual Reality (DVR) is
organised by the National School of Engineering of Brest (ENIB) in
co-operation with t he Institute of Industrial Data-processing (3xi)
in the university and indus trial environment of the TechnopF4le
Brest-Iroise.(TBI)

        1. Aim of the formation

The Virtual Reality is a recent booming subject, meeting point of
differe nt specialities such as Data processing, Computer graphics,
Simulation, Audio-visual, Robotics and Telecommunications.It brings a
group of methods and tools to create the illusion of reality in real
time. It also allows to try the us ers in a real-life situation, and
help them out to make choices as soon as possible in the process of
decision. The techniques of Virtual Reality are being integrated in
various industr ial projects :
navigation in 3D universes, simulators of a new generation,
tele-operati on andtele-robotics in hostile places, territory
planning, assistance for surge ry, cooperative tele-working, 3D
interfaces human/computer, analysis and maki ng of a financial
decision, analysis of satellite data,... While offering an overview
of new concepts and methods in the field of human/computer
co-operation, this formation in Distributed Virtual Realit y prepars
the graduated engineers (or equivalent degrees) to be captain of
project for the integr ation of the Distributed Virtual Reality
techniques in companies from the whole industrial sector, where
innovation and diversification happened to be absolutely necessary in
the actual economic context.. It induces a reflexion on the innovation
process, on the application of such new technologies in our so ciety
and on their integration in the development of companies.

        2. Development of the formation

The studies are planned for 12 months. It occurs as described hereafter :

        - from December to Mai : conferences, courses, practice activities,
project of technological integration,
        - from June to November : research or study working realised for a
mission in a firm; this work is the subject of a professional thesis incl
uding a written report and an oral defence.

        3. teaching program :

The teaching program presents two different faces :

        - acquisition of the most advanced concepts of Distributed Virtual
Reality,

        - integration of the techniques associated with the engineer industrial
projects.

Those two main modules correspond to about 500 hours of conferences,
courses, practice activities as well as a team work on a project of
technological integration . They are completed by a six months study
or a research realised for a mission in f irms, research center or
laboratory; the final technical report of this mission is publicly
defenced by the end of the 12 months formation.

        3.4 Selection of the candidates

This formation is opened to graduated engineers ( or equivalent
diploma) in the fields of Data Processing, Computer graphics,
Simulation, Audio-visual, Robotics and Telecommunications. In addition
to the good technical and scientific qualities, the candidate will
have relational aptitudes, a sens of profesionnal engagment and a wish
to work in a team and with an industrial association. The candidate
selection is done on school records and after and interview in June.
