I'm writing an MSEE thesis on
	Hierarchical Multiresolution Terrain Polygon Generation

Hierarchical in the sense that there are parent-child relationships
between representations (i.e., a parent is split to form children).
Multiresolution in the sense that a region is represented in range
of resolutions from coarse (few, large triangles) to fine (many,
small triangles), so that a scene can be rendered which applies
an acceptable resolution (e.g., based on eyepoint position).

I'm looking for help in writing a section that would describe when/why
terrain modeling started. Maybe some background on "how they did it
in the old days." I could make some obvious statements, but would rather
be able to read through some earlier papers and such.

thanks for your time,
Robert
