Position Description: We are looking for someone who is imaginative, bright, self-motivated, entrepreneurial, and is a product-oriented team player. S/he should be able to design and fabricate novel mechanical linkages and mechanisms with attention to detail and manufacture ability. The ideal candidate should be an excellent rapid-prototyper that also possesses the ability to produce a polished final product. Machining experience (preferably CNC) as well as familiarity with various manufacturing materials and processes (injection molding, castings) are also preferred. In addition to possessing excellent mechanical design skills, it is highly desirable that the candidate have sufficient training to implement computer control of his/her mechanical designs. Such training should include familiarity with DC motors, encoders, I/O boards, digital/analog electronics, embedded microprocessors, sensing technologies, C/C++ programming and control theory. Ideally, s/he has a masters degree with some relevant industry (or academic) design experience. A broad range of responsibilities and learning opportunities include: designing and fabricating devices which produce force and tactile feedback to a user's hand and body, developing instrumentation which measures human motion, and creating innovative human-computer and virtual reality interfaces.
