Background

Umea University continues to develop the use of modern information
technology (IT) in education and research with strong efforts on
research, development, and knowledge transfer within computer
graphics, scientific visualization, and Virtual Reality (VR)
technology. The efforts include application oriented projects in
collaboration between Umea University, industry, and society. The
activities are based on collaboration between departments at Umea
University, Center for educational technology (CUT), High-Performance
Computing Center North (HPC2N), and VRlab. Basic research and
development is conducted, e.g., at the Department of Computing
Science, Department of Informatics, and the Institute of Design.

CUT has the overall and the coordination responsibilities for Umea
University*s common efforts in developing the use of modern IT within
different forms of education. The aim of CUT*s activities is to
improve and to facilitate teaching and studies in undergraduate and
graduate education and to put the university into a leading position
in the area of educational use of IT.

HPC2N is a national center for scientific and parallel computing
located at Umea university. The activities include education and
competence development in high-performance computing (HPC),
visualization, and VR technology; regional and national services for
HPC production runs in scientific and industrial applications;
knowledge transfer (new users, new areas); application and user
support; development and porting of user environments and
applications; and development of established and new national and
international contacts. The parties of HPC2N are Umea University, Lule
University of Technology, The Swedish Institute of Space Physics in
Kiruna, The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Umea
and Mid-Sweden University. HPC2N*s national commission is regulated in
an agreement with the Swedish Council for High Performance Computing
(HPDR).

VRlab is a regional center for development of VR applications in various
areas, for customers from communities, county councils, industry, and
universities. The parties in VRlab
include Vsterbotten County Administration, Umea Municipality, Umea
University, Vsterbotten County Council, and Center for IT in Northern
Sweden (SNIC).

Umea University offers academic and industrial users access to modern
high-performance computers, thanks to donations by the Knut and Alice
Wallenberg Foundation. We have one of Europe*s most powerful computer
graphics systems, a Silicon Graphics Onyx2 with 2 Infinite Reality
graphics units, and a research laboratory with advanced graphics
workstations and equipment for VR applications. For large scale
computations, HPC2N has the most powerful IBM system outside the US, a
scalable 66 node IBM SP system. The Onyx2 and the SP system connect
by a high-speed link (HiPPI), enabling efficient and appropriate use
of the computer facilities.
