Theoretical and empirical papers highlighting the issues and
research results of developing and evaluating highly interactive
user interfaces for virtual reality (VR) are solicited for a
special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing.

In recent years there has been considerable research and
development in the field of virtual environments (VE) technology.
The two-dimensional graphical interface is yielding ground to
three-dimensional interfaces in domains such as entertainment,
education, information visualization, and design, and this trend
is likely to continue. A common observation is that, while the VR
experience can be compelling, the user interface is often awkward
and distracting. Furthermore, these interface constraints may be
inhibiting the development of VEs in which real "work" is
accomplished. User interfaces and interaction in virtual
environments is maturing as a an important and very exciting
research area. Essential research progress is needed to
understand how to support the user’s interaction within the
virtual environments, what interface concepts, paradigms,
software architectures and techniques should be used for the
development of immersive interfaces.

Topics of interests for this special issue include, but not
limited to:

- innovative immersive interfaces and interface metaphors;
- user interfaces for immersive modeling;
- collaborative virtual environments;
- VR interface programming methods and toolkits;
- human factors aspects of immersive interfaces;
- multi-modality interface methods;
- interfaces for augmented reality and wearable systems;
