Mixed Reality Systems Lab. Inc. is very proud of presenting a new type
of 3D display, Rear Cross Lenticular 3D (RCL3D), at "IS&T / SPIE's
10th International Symposium," San Jose Convention Center, on January
27th and 28th.

The configuration and principle of this 3D display is presented in the
"Electronic Imaging: Science and Technology" conference program,
conference 3295A, session 5, on January 27th. Exhibition and
demonstration will take place in the seesion 9 on January
28th. Auto-stereoscopic VRML viewer for this RCL3D is also
demonstrated.

14.5$B!7(J No-eyeglasses 3D Display
-------------------------------
We have developed a 3D display without eyeglasses using our
original 'Rear Cross Lenticular method.'

This 3D display has features below.
*No-eyeglasses
*3D images with high quality and less crosstalk
*Compatibility of image data with field sequential method
*Moire-less in the viewing zone
*Simple,compact, lowcost
*Wide viewing zone

Principle of this 3D display
----------------------------
This 'Rear Cross Lenticular 3D Display' with two lenticular lens sheets
and a checkered pattern mask between TFT LC panel and the backlight unit
control the direction of the rays from the backlight to enter each of eyes.
The horizontal striped image which composed of images for the left and the
right eye is arranged alternately and displayed on the LC panel. Each
horizontal striped image is illuminated by light-rays directed toward
either the left or the right eye, which allows the viewer to see a 3D image
without wearing special eyeglasses.

Furthermore, the viewer can see 3D images with less crosstalk within
vertically wide viewing zone by lenticular lens sheets whose lenslets run
horizontally.

On this type of backlight optical system, thinness (about 5 mm) and less
parts make a small sized and light weight 3D display.

Specification of Prototype of 3D display
----------------------------------------
Display type:	Rear Cross Lenticular method
LC panel: 14.5 inch TFT color LCD
Resolution:	1,024$B!_(J768 pixels (XGA)
Viewing distance:	65 cm

Auto-stereoscopic VRML 2.0 viewer
---------------------------------
VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is the most common 3D format
on the Internet. Although many VRML viewers have been developped as
commercial products or public domain software, they assume that users
see the cyberspace as 2D images on a typical computer display. We
constructed a VRML viewer specialized for our RCL3D display. It
is programmed as a helper application for WWW browsers and retrieves
data from VRML sites on the Internet. The viewer renders a pair of
stereoscopic images based on the data, and merges them to an appropriate
image format for RCL3D. Users see and interact with the displayed
cyberspace with 3D sensation.

Applications
------------
3D monitor for PC or WS
3D monitor for CAD, Medical imaging, Virtual Reality
3D-TV
