The congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) has released
an HTML version of its background paper, Virtual Reality and
Technologies for Combat Simulation. The paper describes uses of
synthetic-environment technologies for simulating combat. It traces
technology development from the 1929 Link Trainer through the SAGE air
defense system, the first head-mounted display, and the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency's SIMNET simulator networking
project. The HTML version consists of 20 HTML files and five image
files. The recommended starting point is
   URL ftp://otabbs.ota.gov/pub/vr.military/hypertext/contents.htm .

The HTML pages contain hypertext links to the ASCII text of the
paper, which is in
   URL ftp://otabbs.ota.gov/pub/vr.military/
as announced in sci.virtual-worlds on 7 October 1994.

Printed copies are available from the U.S. Government Printing Office.
