When I was at Digital we developed a prototype VR system that
incorporated torque feedback into molecular modeling.  The prototype
let the chemist select a bond, then twist the molecule around the bond
and feel the difference in molecular forces in the different 
conformations using a portable torque-feedback device.  This was
intended for use in exploring enzyme docking during drug discovery.

The work is described in my CHI '92 paper on "Participatory Design
of a Portable Torque-Feedback Device" (ACM Press / Addison-Wesley),
I believe the paper is being reprinted in the new edition of "Readings
in Human-Computer Interaction" due out soon.  The device itself is
patented in the US (US Patent 5,185,561).

Fred Brooks and colleagues have been pursuing the use of graphics and
VR in molecular modeling for a long time.  A good reference is their
"Project GROPE" paper from SIGGRAPH '90.
