Rodney and Blair! What a timely question. I just finished a doctoral dissertation on this issue at CAiiA-STAR. My own focus is on design methodologies for mixed reality environments. It takes off from the field of architecture, but I think it's relevant to other applied arts. As Blair notes efforts by designers in AR/MR often outline concepts rather than deal directly with the tech matters underlying them. Unfortunately, the tools for realizing these concepts require expertise beyond the scope of the designer. I often employ Robinson Crusoe bricolage techniques using anything that works. The answer, however, requires of artists and technologists a willingness to explore possibilities together. I'm game. Rodney, We've been doing some of this, as you note below; check out some of the other papers on our web pages, especially those from CAST, TIDSE, and IWEC. I would also check out other work in those conferences (and a more recent conference whose name escapes me): while they aren't focused on AR, there are others thinking about some of these things. Also, check out Benford et al at Nottingham, they are doing some cool MR stuff. In general, the design stuff has often been the opposite of the technology work; lots of design ideas with very little implementation. Noel's work on Alice, and Jeannie's work on Three Angry Men, were both also New Media Design Master's Thesis' ... you can probably find them on the IDT pages in www.lcc.gatech.edu (if you can't, I could dig them up, since I was on their committee's). Hi all, Is anyone writing about identifying design and aesthetic issues in = augmented reality? For example: - what design problems exist that are unique to (or more noticeable in) = AR? - what design opportunities are unique to AR? - what kind of metaphors, visual representations, narrative devices etc. = are successful or unsuccessful and why? I am interested in writing more about this stuff so I want to see what people are writing already. So far, I have noticed a paragraph here and there in papers more focused on the technology.=20 I am sure that, as the tech becomes more usable to non-engineers, these issues will become a more lively area of investigation. I see a few things heading in this direction already. http://www.cc.gatech.edu/ael/projects/ThreeAngryMen.html, for example, exploring multiple viewpoint drama. Please let me know any other cool links or papers you can point me to. I'll summarize the links etc and re-post once I have a few. Rod. Hi Rodney, I am working on design support for architecture. I started years ago by working under Holger Regenbrecht on VRAM - which basically was investigating interfaces for modelling in VR. After several stations and different input and output methods I ended up with AR Toolkit. I worked on a sketching system for architects to explore spatially complex arrangements. There are some things published in AR Toolkit Workshop 2003, CAADRIA 2003 and an upcoming journal article (IJAC - International Journal of Architectural Computing). Those are discussing basically AR from the viewpoint of an architect. What can it provide in terms of creative formal design as well as mobile AR, designing in context etc. My focus is on modelling and interaction techniques for collaborative AR.
