Both of us thought this idea is "obvious" in the patent sense. I put this in the public domain: take the backlight off an LCD screen, perhaps replacing it with a transmissive piece of plastic as a contrast filter - and - you have an AR display. Stereo can be done using LCD shutter glasses and tracking the user, screen, and object(s) Anybody done this yet? ... bandit (pacificVR.com) ______________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, write to ARforum-unsubscribe@l .......... |

We thought about using an LCD display in the way you suggested, but it seemed to us that there are no LCD displays whose refresh rate allows to see stereo images: do you know if such an LCD display exists? Thank you Alessandra ______________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, write to ARforum-unsubscribe@l .......... |

Apply NOW! http://www.bcentral.com/listbot/NextCard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Bandit I would like to do it but I cannot find a transparent LCD display and I dont really want to get into the hardware to achieve that. Also, using a camera fixed to the screen to replace your eye is actually simpler to put together as you dont have to track the transformation between the screen and your eyes. I think the Arvika project team have been working on such a device. Apply NOW! http://www.bcentral.com/listbot/NextCard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This is in response to 2 postings: Refresh rate: The best LCD referesh out there is about 76 HZ However, most drivers buffer up the odd/even scan lines and dump the whole image out. So the effective rate (as I understand it) is 38 HZ I then assume this is divided by 2 for the left/right, = 19 Hz So there would be a flicker Transparent LCD: ALL LCDs are transparent. Just take off the backlight. The problems with the LCD are that the tracking/math is more involved (but not too bad) and a boom of some sort is manditory, otherwise the users arms will fall off, something most users will object to. A fixed frame is just a simple boom, but might be applicable to some apps, ie PCB assembly. A camera-thru HMD needs more calibration (for correcting the optics) and has the issue of focal length. I was at the SID show last week. A startup has taken two LCDs, stripped the backlight off one, overlayed it on the other, and came up with an effective 3D display. It takes a fair amount of math from some russian phds, but it is effective. Check out NeurOK: 3d.neurok.com 703-243-9704 The bottom line, of course, is there is no optimal solution yet. PS: there is a SF book "Noir" where the character has had his optic nerves hacked so that the world has an overlay of 1920 detective motif - its an interesting read. Cannot remember the author ... bandit Yohan Baillot wrote: > > > Dear Bandit > > I would like to do it but I cannot find a transparent LCD display and I dont > really > want to get into the hardware to achieve that.
