I saw a working prototype at the ACM1 show in may 2001 in san jose, ca. I assume this is the same prototype you are talking about. It was a monicle on a headband. It was roughly 2x2x4 (inches) and actually worked reasonably well. There was some wavy-ness in the lines, and mono (red, as I recollect). I tried looking at far away and near stuff and still read the message displayed. It seemed to work ok for that. They said they were trying to make it smaller ( 2-inch cube??) No idea on timing for production release, and cost will prob be > $5K Also no idea if they are considering a stereo (or at least 2 eyes) version. Hope this helps ... bandit (pacificVR.com) Stefan Gruen wrote: >Helle everybody, > >it seems, that there exists a prototype of a HMD from Microvision >http://www.mvis.com/retscandisp.htm . Helle everybody, it seems, that there exists a prototype of a HMD from Microvision http://www.mvis.com/retscandisp.htm . Has anybody tried it out? Does anybody knows, when it will be on the market and how in which price range it will be (<= $5000 or >$5000)? STefan ----------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Stefan M. Hello Stefan, the only display available from Microvision currently is a prototype and is very costly (>>>$5000 ) and only a few people have a permanent prototype for their use. It is currently 640x480, monochrome (red), 60Hz, and monocular. Its power consumption is too high at the moment for long time mobile use so I think they are working on that first. We had the display at Siggraph this year in Etech and we demonstrated it to a couple of people interested. The general impression is that the transmitance of the display is perfect (it is totally transparent), and the laser allows to see the virtual image in the Etech-style lighting. It is still not suitable for outdoor use in full sunlight I think personnally with this illumination power. 640x480 is too low resultion to be realistically able to read a lot of label and fine geometry like we do in our project. They were supposed to come up with higher resolution or color this summer but I did not see it happen. Wider field of view and better resolution are also planned but they have problem with the torsion of the scanning mirror. That's all I know Hope this help Yohan ___________________________________________ Yohan Baillot VRLab / Naval Research Laboratory 4555 Overlook Avenue SE ______ Code 5580, Room 119A /\ \ Washington DC 20375 / \ \ Phone (202) 404 7801 / \______\ Mobile (703) 732 5679 \ / / Fax (202) 404 1122 \ / / baillot@a ............... \/_____ / http://ait.nrl.navy.mil/people/baillot/ http://ait.nrl.navy.mil/vrlab/projects/BARS/BARS.html ___________________________________________ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stefan Gruen" <gruenvog@l .........> To: <arforum@t .........> Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2001 2:41 AM Subject: [ARFORUM] HMD from Microvision > Helle everybody, > > it seems, that there exists a prototype of a HMD from Microvision > http://www.mvis.com/retscandisp.htm .
