Glyphs

Does anyone know if there is a restriction on the glyph border, I know 
there has to be a border but does it have to be a certain ratio to the 
size of the glyph or is it enough that it is recognisable as a border, or 
is this all taken care of when the toolkit is taught the glyphs?
