Rodney, Please post any info you get: they only ones I've seen are the junky ones from orange micro and so forth. Too big to be useful. Actually, the ADS one is one I bought; I can't say much good about it, since my WinXP box bluescreens when I try to access it. :( I've also noticed that annoying bit about USB 2.0 labels on USB 1.1 devices -- logitech does that, so all their USB 1.1 cameras are labelled "USB 2.0 compatible" ... of course, they actually work (unlike the ADS one) so I can't say too much bad about them. Hi all, I am shopping for USB-2 cameras. Anyone got one they recommend or, conversely, warn people not to buy? I'd prefer one small enough to mount on a HMD but with an okay image quality. I'm going to use it under windows XP. Rod. And giving the quality of the drivers for their firewire web-camera I would not really suggest them. Also it is not clearly stated which USB 2.0 they mean, as there is nothing like "Turbo USB 2.0" You should be aware that USB 2.0 includes the former USB 1.1. In a silent move of the USB consortium [1] USB 1.1 devices can also be named USB 2.0 (without any extension) or USB 2.0 Fullspeed ... I did some research on that and figured out that all of the Firewire Cameras use the same Sony Chipset. So the camera is working with Orange IBot driver. But best results I get with the UniBrain Fire-I drivers - even it was PIA to get them out of the installer. My point with that is, that maybe something similar can be done with the USB drivers. Maybe the Orange Micro drivers work better with the ADS? I did not try that - just take it as a wild guess. /Hartmut > I've also noticed that annoying bit about USB 2.0 labels on USB 1.1 > devices -- logitech does that, so all their USB 1.1 cameras are > labelled "USB 2.0 compatible" ... of course, they actually work (unlike > the ADS one) so I can't say too much bad about them. > > > > On Feb 8, 2004, at 10:11 PM, Hartmut Seichter wrote: > >> Blair MacIntyre wrote: >> >>> Rodney, >>> Please post any info you get: they only ones I've seen are the >>> junky ones from orange micro and so forth. Subject: | RE: USB-2 cameras: Any reccomendations? | ||
There is a specification for digital cameras on Firewire, and this allows one generic driver under Linux to talk to all DC camera types without any modifications. This is quite nice because you don't have to worry about chasing down drivers. No idea what the deal is with Windows, I would have thought you could have used the generic XP driver instead of using dodgy manufacturer drivers. For USB cameras there are absolutely no standards whatsoever for cameras, and so each manufacturer can and does do whatever they want as long as they supply a driver - some models which appear the same on the surface have totally different internals. The problem is that the cameras come and go quickly, so when the next version of Windows comes out they can't be bothered releasing new drivers for them. So with USB cameras your mileage may vary with drivers depending on the camera and the manufacturer ...
