PCMCIA cards cannot power firewire cameras. It is just a sad truth. =20= The pcmcia port doesn't have the juice to do it. USB2 PCMCIA ports can, though; I've used a USB camera over a usb =20 port from a USB2 PCMCIA card. The easiest way to get a firewire camera going without an external =20 power supply is to switch to a Powerbook (which all come with 6 pin =20 firewire) and use macosx. :) :) If Apple would just come out =20 with a tablet, I'd be a happy camper. Ah! Excellent, I hadn't looked there, even though we use their =20 cameras. I have been looking for something like this for a while (we =20= found one such product once, but it was discontinued when we ordered). I'm also going to give it a try. We have a nice IOGEAR PCMCIA card =20 that has 2 firewire ports and takes 12V in; I'm going to try it with =20= that, in addition to with their cables ... Hello,
=20
More of a general AR question, but I was hoping to connect a Point Grey
firefly camera to a HP TC1100 tablet PC, and create a sort of AR window.
Since the tablet PC had no firewire connections I had to add a PCMCIA
card with firewire ports.
=20
Unfortunately it isn't working, and I've recently discovered that PCMCIA
cards may not be able to supply power to external devices (so why they
have 6 pin connections I don't know).
=20
Does anyone else have experience of trying to get something similar to
work?
=20
Thanks
=20
Matthew

BTW, Matthew, we've done this (camera on a TC1100) and it works well =20 (we did this during a demo at ISMAR in Tokyo a few years ago, and =20 also had a VizTracker on there; it was cool!); the TC1100 is small =20 and light, and plenty powerful to run the ARToolkit. One thing: if you can afford a Dragonfly, use it instead: - the video quality is WAY better - the speed is WAY higher, especially if you are going to use 320x240 =20= (you'd have to on a laptop, anyway). We wrote a little routine that =20 creates a 320x240 color image from the raw 640x480 bayer image =20 pattern on the dragonfly, and the cpu usage was about half that of =20 the firefly ... even at 640x480, the overhead was much lower. > Unfortunately it isn=92t working, and I=92ve recently discovered that =20= > PCMCIA cards may not be able to supply power to external devices =20 > (so why they have 6 pin connections I don=92t know). > > > > Does anyone else have experience of trying to get something similar =20= > to work? > > > > Thanks > > > > Matthew > > This message is intended for the addressee(s) only and should not =20 > be read, copied or disclosed to anyone else outwith the University =20 > without the permission of the sender. Thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately because of the intended
mobility the use of hubs and such isn't viable (and as nice as the
apples look I don't think I could cope with the switch).
=20
I was considering consulting the electronics department here about
exposing the power and ground wires in the firewire cable, and attaching
a battery (thus obviously voiding the warranty of any device within 3
metres), but then I found this article on the Point Grey site:

It seems there might some cables that can draw power from the USB port
and feed it into the firewire cable. If it works I'll let you know.

Thanks

DO NOT CONNECT UP A CAMERA DIRECTLY TO YOUR LAPTOP WITH A BATTERY AND =20=
CUSTOM MADE CABLE!!!!!
Ok, now that I've said that, we tried to do this a few years ago, and =20=
we blew up the firewire controller chip in our Dell 8100. Turns out =20
that some cameras send high voltage spikes down the data lines while =20
they are powering up and this kills some firewire controllers. You =20
may get lucky but you may not get lucky as well. I did a lot of =20
research into this after it happened and it makes a lot of sense.
See the following web site for more information:
http://wearables.unisa.edu.au/projects/OxCart/www/index.html
Project Oxcart was started to replace a broken TSB41AB1 chip located =20
inside our Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop. The chip is a 1394 Firewire =20
controller and was blown by a voltage surge on the firewire cable =20
that is surprisingly quite common once we did some reading on the =20
topic. We decided that rather than pay for a new and expensive =20
motherboard, that it would be straightforward to simply replace the =20
PHY chip to repair the damage. The project was successful and we now =20
have our firewire port working again!

Wayne

class=3D"Apple-style-span" style=3D"font-size: 10px;">Project Oxcart was =
started to replace a broken TSB41AB1 chip located inside our Dell =
Inspiron 8100 laptop. The chip is a 1394 Firewire controller and was =
blown by a voltage surge on the firewire cable that is surprisingly =
quite common once we did some reading on the topic. We decided that =
rather than pay for a new and expensive motherboard, that it would be =
straightforward to simply replace the PHY chip to repair the damage. The =
project was successful and we now have our firewire port working =
again!</SPAN></FONT></FONT></DIV><DIV><BR =
