Hello, I am looking for a webcam that will work on linux platform either with or without ARToolKit. Previous posting in April (inexpensive USB camera) suggested some webcam to use. Is Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 the same as Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 as far as the linux drive is concern? Is Logitech Quickcam Notebook Pro supported under linux platform? Thank you very much Simon __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.yahoo.com |

I've found that lately USB camera support under Linux isn't getting
any better. Some of the drivers which I used to use in 2.4 kernels do
not work in 2.6 because the devices do not properly follow the USB
spec. My understanding is that no USB 2.0 cameras are supported, and
you have to rely on the low quality USB 1.0 based cameras instead.
Also, many of the cameras you can buy change internal chipsets and
you can't tell from the model number which chipset is in use without
plugging it in and trying it. If you have the chance, the best thing
to do is take a laptop down to the shop and plug them in and see if
an app like xawtv runs with them.
If you want to use Linux you really should use Firewire cameras, they
are a bit more expensive but they work really well without any
problems. USB cameras and Linux will cause you lots of trouble.
regards,
Wayne
