Subject: | camera for pda running windows mobile 5.0? | ||
Hi, I would like to read your suggestions for a camera for a pda running windows mobile 5.0. A while ago I was looking for a suitable one and at that time I was unable to find one. But at this moment I am still not able to find one... Does anyone have a suggestion? I would like to use a Dell (-like) Axim, with fast processor and hires display for artoolkitplus experiments. thanks a lot bye Raymond |

hi Raymond, we looked at quite a lot of cameras attachable to Windows CE PDAs (stopped doing so a year ago) and none of them was really good. at the end we used the Spectec SD camera which does not have a good image quality, but at least it is very fast (15fps at 320x240 with little CPU usage). there are drivers for WM2003 as well as WM2005 (not DirectShow) it. i generally recommend using PDAs with built-in cameras because any built-in camera i saw so far had better quality than any attachable one i saw. if the PDA runs WM2005 you have a good chance that the camera is accessible via DirectShow. otherwise you'll need to get a proprietary SDK from the PDA creator (which usually is rather difficult...). i'm keeping a list of Smartphones running Windows Mobile which are suitable for AR: http://www.icg.tu-graz.ac.at/Members/daniel/Smartphones maybe this can guide you to a good device... bye, Daniel |

Hi Daniel, Thank you very much for this wonderful overview! I have seen the same things about the attachable cameras, unfortunately. Somehow there seems no market for the combination pda + separate camera, the dell would do so nice. Indeed I want to develop a directshow graph, you're right. thanks again, best regards Raymond > hi Raymond, > > we looked at quite a lot of cameras attachable to Windows CE PDAs > (stopped doing so a year ago) and none of them was really good. at the > end we used the Spectec SD camera which does not have a good image > quality, but at least it is very fast (15fps at 320x240 with little CPU > usage). there are drivers for WM2003 as well as WM2005 (not DirectShow) > it. > > i generally recommend using PDAs with built-in cameras because any > built-in camera i saw so far had better quality than any attachable one > i saw. if the PDA runs WM2005 you have a good chance that the camera is > accessible via DirectShow. otherwise you'll need to get a proprietary > SDK from the PDA creator (which usually is rather difficult...). > > i'm keeping a list of Smartphones running Windows Mobile which are > suitable for AR: > http://www.icg.tu-graz.ac.at/Members/daniel/Smartphones > maybe this can guide you to a good device... > > bye, > Daniel > > |
