Dear List, for upcoming university projects which will use ARToolKit on different linux machines we want to buy up-to-date usb cameras. Due to the tremendous amount of offers, I'd appreciate any kind of recommendations. Especially I am looking for a camera with a resoultion of 1024x786 @ 30 fps on linux, if this is possible. Do you know of any usb cams which fit into this category? Could you give me any recommendations? Thanks for your help and best regards, Roland _______________________________________________ ARToolKit mailing list ARToolKit@l ................. http://www.hitlabnz.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/artoolkit |

Could you give me any recommendations? i doubt you will find a USB camera that can capture at that size and rate. i think you'll need to look at firewire cameras. i may very well be wrong however. the Unibrain cameras might be a good place to start if you are looking into firewire cameras for Linux. julian -- julian oliver http://julianoliver.com http://selectparks.net _______________________________________________ ARToolKit mailing list ARToolKit@l ................. http://www.hitlabnz.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/artoolkit |

I currently use a uEye brand machine vision camera (UI-2230). They are made by IDS, and can be purchased through several suppliers found online. The model I have runs at 1024x768 at a maximum frame rate of 30fps. It uses USB 2.0. Linux support is listed on the product sheet, but I have not used it on anything but XP. Product link<http://www.ids-imaging.com/frontend/catalog_detail.php?pID=448&form_KatTable=menue3&form_KatID=9&nav1=25&nav2=59&nav3=9> The camera works fine except for a color issue when I'm using it with ARToolkit (osgART to be specific). It doesn't seem to affect tracking, just yellows the image. Admittedly, I haven't explored the issue that much. This camera certainly isn't the only option. I would recommend doing a web search using "machine vision" as a keyword. These kinds of cameras are considerably more expensive than a basic web cam, of course. They also often require the purchase of a lens in addition to the camera body itself. So, if you have a lab willing to cover the cost, it may be something worth researching.
