- Begonias: (fiborous/waxed)
Begonias prefer part to full shade and rich well-drained soil. If you can, water the soil around the plants and not on the plants themselves. Attractive foliage (bronze or green leaf) with dainty pink, white, or red flowers.
- Celosia: (Plume)
Celosia performs best in full sun and rich well-drained soil. The flowers are either red or yellow and resemble a plume or showy feather. Celosia will catch the eye! Can be dried.
- Celosia: (Cockscomb)
This type of celosia also thrives in full sun and rich well-drained soil. The flower resembles a giant chanticleer's head. Also an eye catcher and can be dried.
- Coleus:
Today's varieties of coleus are not your mother's coleus of yesterday. The new varieties sport striking leaf textures, rich colors and heights for every place in the garden or planter. Most require full shade and average soil. Water during dry periods. There are some varieities, however, that tolerate part sun. You should see what you are missing.
- Cosmos:

- Impatiens:
Great addition to any shade garden. Will tolerate some sun but will require more watering. If the plants are wilting in the morning then it needs watering--if plants are wilting during the day, then it might be heat stress and unless dry, do not water. The flower colors range from pink to white to red to salmon to. Appearance is neat without deadheading.
- Lobelia:
Grows well in part shade and average soil. Prefers the cooler temps. A true blue flower that is used in containers or in edging.

- Nierembergia:
Cup shaped flowers are born on tidy 6-12" mounds. Grow in full sun to part shade and in moist rich soil high in organic matter. Flower colors include blue, lilac, violet and white.
- Pansy:
One of the easiest plants to grow and the earliest annual to bloom. Grows well in full sun to part shade, average soil and cool to warm weather. Pansies will become leggy or ragged looking in the heat of July and August. Trim back to neaten appearance and they will return the favor with blooms when the weather cools right through the first few light frosts. If you didn't plant in the spring, try planting in the fall to prolong the garden color, especially when other flowers begin to fade.
- Petunia:
Old Fashioned petunias continue to be a favorite in the garden or in hanging baskets and containers. Prefers full sun and average well drained soil. Water regularly after planting to establish roots; otherwise, water when dry. Too much water is not a good thing. And be careful not to over-fertilize for this will result in more foliage than blooms. Deadheading keeps a neat appearance and encourages blooms. In contrast to the large flower of the old-fashioned petunia, there is the mini petunia that does not require deadheading and is more heat tolerant. The very popular Wave Petunia also does not require deadheading. We find with all petunias that a little trim now and then will help to maintain a bushy or full habit.
- Portulaca: (Moss Rose)
This trailing plant likes it hot, sunny and dry. The foliage is succulent and topped by red, orange, yellow, purple or pink flowers. Grows 4-8" high and spreads up to 2 feet.
- Salvia:
Salvia prefers full sun to part shade and moist but well drained soil. Deadheading will keep apearance neat. Colors include white red, burgandy, purple, and blue.
- Snapdragons:
These garden favorites are easy to grow and require full sun and moderately fertile soil. There are many varieties to suit your garden needs. The taller variety ("Rocket" height:30-36") is used toward the back of gardens for a backdrop. It also is used for cutting. The mid-height snapdragon ("liberty" height:18-22") is, of course, used in the middle of the border and the shorter snapdragon ("Crown" height: 15-18") is used closer to the front. The tallest variety may require staking, and is worth the effort.
- Stocks:
Stocks, like pansies, are a cool weather plant that can be planted in spring and fall. Their fragrant flowers in pink, rose and lavender prefer full sun to light shade. They do not like drying out so keep soil evenly moist.
- Thunbergia: (Black-eyed Susan vine)
Adorbale vining flower that reaches a height of 6-8'. Use as you would morning glories-strings or on a trellis. Also nice in hanging baskets. Prefers full sun to part shade. Water regularly, but do not over water.

This cute little flower resembles the Gloxinia. It is a cool weather plant that prefers shade to part shade. Will take more sun but this may require more watering. It is important not to overwater. Grows 6-8" in height. If it begins to look leggy, give it a trim to neaten and shape.

"Profusion"offers beautiful orange or cherry colored blooms in exchange for little attention. Prefers heat and to be kept on the dry side. "Zinnita" offers double flowers in a host of colors.
